think is worth talking about. When I read blogs or posts, I just read the headlines and if it is
too long, I move on so you will see my thoughts and it will always include the takeaway first
rather than leaving it to the end.
Motivate or to Demotivate
The forgotten motivator is RECOGNITION. By not realising or forgetting this means you are
demotivating your team.
Recognition is telling people ‘Thank you’, it doesn’t have to cost anything. If you want to buy
small rewards, think of things like breakfast, a voucher or an early finish or day off on there
birthday.
Note– here I was going to say ‘thank you’ for doing a great job but actually those motivated
by recognition might be those that turn up day in day out, with a good attitude and quietly
get on with their job, without a fuss or shouting about it. Don’t forget your loyal quiet
employees that just do the job!
What it’s not is an email. Emails are not personal; they can get quickly read and brushed
away or not interpreted right.
So, think about who needs recognition as a motivator and recognise their efforts today. Tell
others about them and you’ll see happier, more motivated individuals. If you don’t know
what motivates them then next time you see them, ask.
End of the headline but more on the importance of recognition as a motivator.
- Be mindful that of the difference types of recognition and individual preferences. For
example, someone may love being recognised Infront of the whole team but others that will
totally put them on so quiet acknowledgment might be more appropriate. You can be
formal with a certificate or gift or some sort or spontaneous which I think is the one that
gets missed the most. - For people who are motivated by recognition it will improve performance and productivity,
it will make them feel valued and appreciated. This can inspire others in the team and
creates a positive working environment where everyone will go the extra mile.
Motivated employees will always be more loyal, be more productive and will be more
satisfied. Most people want a happy team and to retain staff as long as possible and these
are simple inexpensive ways that can really help keep people feeling valued and positive.
